Healthy gums support the teeth and cover the roots. There should not be large pockets or receding tissue when the gums are in optimum health. If you have receding gums, treatment may be needed to restore your oral health.Click to open in this tab At Neville Dental Studio, we provide diagnosis and treatment for receding gums at our dental clinics in Horse Cave, Bowling Green and Scottsville, KY.

When the gums recede away from the teeth, it is usually due to gum disease. Gingivitis is a precursor to periodontal disease, and both can cause receding gums. When bacteria flourish on the teeth, they create a sticky plaque that can harden into calculus or tartar. Both plaque and tartar contain bacteria that damage the enamel, causing tooth decay and infections in the gum tissue.

Tartar, in particular, can result in receding gums. The rough surface of calculus aggravates the sensitive gum tissue and results in it shrinking away from the teeth. When calculus forms below the gum line, pockets form where more bacteria can hide and flourish, perpetuating gum infection and disease.

Relief from Gum Disease

If you have gingivitis or gum disease that is causing receding gums, treatment is available. The first step is removing all plaque and tartar from the teeth with a thorough dental cleaning. You may need more frequent teeth cleanings or a deep cleaning to remove the tartar from the roots of your teeth. When combined with improved daily oral hygiene at home and possibly antibacterial medications, you can restore healthier gums with treatment at our dental centers.

Receding gums are a sign of gum disease, which can lead to serious oral health issues. If caught early, gum disease can be effectively treated to prevent bone and tooth loss. With regular visits to your dentist and home oral hygiene, you can restore healthier gums and teeth.

If you have noticed receding gum tissue around your teeth, it is time to schedule a dental cleaning and checkup.
